Using the Polyphonic Wizard
with the Nokia 5200
The Nokia 5200 does not always accept
standard midi ringtones like some of the 'standard' handsets,
however it is supported by the Polyphonic Wizard using the Nokia
(alternate) option.
The Polyphonic Wizard will convert standard midi files into a
format suitable for the phone, and then let you download the ring
tone to the phone without using cables.
Quick Guide
If you want to skip the long guide and
just get on with things, all you need to do is...
- Download and install the Polyphonic
Wizard (here)
- Start the Wizard by clicking on the
desktop icon
- Click the 'add a ringtone' button and
choose a ringtone, then trim the ringtone and finally select
Nokia (Alternate) for the phone type
- Connect your phone to your pc
following the instructions in the software and download the ringtone.
Thats all there is to it!
Full Guide
To add a new polyphonic ringtone to your
5200, start the Polyphonic
Wizard by double clicking the icon installed on your desktop. (If you have
not installed the Wizard yet, click here to
download a free trial copy).
You should not see a screen like this
one:

Click on the large 'Click
here to add a new polyphonic ringtone' button in the middle of the screen.
The Polyphonic Wizard will
now ask you to select a midi file you want to add to your phone.
Select a midi file you have on your computer.
The Wizard comes with a few
sample midi files, and there are 1000's more available on the
internet. If you do not have any midi
files yet, or know of a really good source take a look at http://www.codingworkshop.com/forum/
as this contains links to popular midi sites.
Once you have selected a
midi file you will be presented with the next step screen:

Using this screen you can
listen to your midi file, and trim it down to a reasonable size.
Remember, when using a midi file as a ringtone you will only usually
be able to listen to the first 20 seconds on your Nokia 5200 before your
answer phone cuts in, so there is little point downloading a 5
minute midi file and using up all your phones memory!
Slide the arrows above the
bar to the left and right and click the 'Preview' button to listen to the
new trimmed midi file. When you are happy with your new composition,
click the 'Continue to next step' button at the bottom of the screen to
move onto the next step.
If you want to do a more
'exact' trim click on the 'Advanced midi editor' button to use the
enhanced midi editor which will allow you to add or remove channels from
the midi as well as a full trim.
The next screen you will see
will look like this:

In this step you simply need
to select the make of the phone, so for the Nokia 5200 we simply
select 'Nokia (alternate)'. If you have a different Nokia, such as
the N-Gage of 3650, select Nokia (standard) if you find the
alternate setting does
not work for you.
You may also be given the
option to volume enhance the ring tone at this stage. The Polyphonic
Wizard will have looked at your midi and will only present this option if
it is possible. If you are given the option try it out - it can make
your ring tone a lot louder, however on some ring tones it may cause
distortion so try the ring tone with it on and off to see which you prefer.
When you have selected Nokia
(alternate),
click the 'Continue to next step' button again to move forward and you
will be shown another screen like this:

You now have a choice.
The Polyphonic Wizard has a
fully functional, inbuilt WAP server, so you can transfer the ring tone
to your phone just like the professional 'pay per tone' services
do when they send you a ring tone.
Alternatively, if you
have a cable and Nokia transfer software you can use the 'Save ring tone to
file' button to save the ring tone, then transfer it with your cable.
If you are going to use the
WAP server (which we recommend), make sure you have a
connection to the internet, then click the 'Continue to next step'
button and the Polyphonic Wizard will show you a screen with an internet
url on it.
Now, on your phone
press 'Services' (this has little picture of a world and a
satellite), then scroll to, and select, 'Go to
address'. Enter the url
given to you by the Polyphonic Wizard.
Click 'OK' when you have
finished and the phone will connect to your PC and should bring up a
screen asking you to confirm the ring tone download by selecting 'select'
one more time. You can then play or save the new ring tone.
Summary
The Nokia 5200 is one of the easiest phones to add polyphonic
ring tones to without paying per ring tone.
The procedure is actually
quite quick once you have done it once, the best way to try it is
using the free trial version and see how it works.
You can download the trial
version here.
