Samsung C100 polyphonic ringtonesUsing the Polyphonic Wizard with the Samsung C100

The Samsung C100 phone is a very popular phone, especially on Virgin Mobile network in the UK.

Support for the C100 was added in version 2.3 of the Polyphonic Wizard,  with full 40 chord support added in version 2.5.

As with most Samsung phones,  you do not need a cable to download ringtones to the C100,  with both WAP and IRDA (infra red) available.

Quick Guide

If you want to skip the long guide and just get on with things,  all you need to do is...

  1. Download and install the Polyphonic Wizard (here)
  2. Start the Wizard by clicking on the desktop icon
  3. Click the 'add a ringtone' button and choose a ringtone,  then trim the ringtone and finally select Samsung for the phone type
  4. Connect your phone to your pc following the instructions in the software and download the ringtone.

Thats all there is to it!

Full Guide

To add a new polyphonic ringtone to your C100,  start the Polyphonic Wizard by double clicking the icon installed on your desktop. (If you have not installed the Wizard yet,  click here to download a free trial copy).

You should not see a screen like this one:

Polyphonic Ringtone Wizard add new ringtone screen

Click on the large 'Click here to add a new polyphonic ringtone' button in the middle of the screen.

The Polyphonic Wizard will now ask you to select a midi file you want to add to your phone.  Select a midi file you have on your computer.

The Wizard comes with a few sample midi files,  and there are 1000's more available on the internet.  If you do not have any midi files yet,  or know of a really good source  take a look at http://www.codingworkshop.com/forum/ as this contains links to popular midi sites.

Once you have selected a midi file you will be presented with the next step screen:

Trim the midi file (Samsung C100)

Using this screen you can listen to your midi file,  and trim it down to a reasonable size.  Remember,  when using a midi file as a ringtone you will only usually be able to listen to the first 20 seconds on your C100 before your answer phone cuts in,  so there is little point downloading a 5 minute midi file and using up all your phones memory!

Slide the arrows above the bar to the left and right and click the 'Preview' button to listen to the new trimmed midi file.  When you are happy with your new composition,  click the 'Continue to next step' button at the bottom of the screen to move onto the next step.

If you want to do a more 'exact' trim click on the 'Advanced midi editor' button to use the enhanced midi editor which will allow you to add or remove channels from the midi as well as a full trim.

The next screen you will see will look like this:

Select Samsung for the C100

In this step you simply need to select the make of the phone,  so for the Samsung C100 we simply select 'Samsung'.

You may also be given the option to volume enhance the ringtone at this stage.  The Polyphonic Wizard will have looked at your midi and will only present this option if it is possible.  If you are given the option try it out - it can make your ringtone a lot louder,  however on some ringtones it may cause distortion so try the ringtone with it on and off to see which you prefer.

When you have selected 'Samsung',  click the 'Continue to next step' button again to move forward and you will be shown another screen like this:

Transferring the ringtone to the Nokia 3510

You now have a choice.

The Polyphonic Wizard has a fully functional,  inbuilt WAP server,  so you can transfer the ringtone to your phone just like the professional 'pay per tone' services do when they send you a ringtone.

Alternatively,  you can use either IRDA (infra red) or a cable and the Samsung Easy GRPS transfer software.  Simple select the 'Save ringtone to file' button to save the ringtone,  then transfer it with your cable or infra red.  You can download the Samsung Easy GRPS software here.

Using the WAP Server

If you are going to use the WAP server (which we recommend),  make sure you have a connection to the internet,  then click the 'Continue to next step' button and the Polyphonic Wizard will show you a screen with an internet url on it.

Now,  on your phone press 'Menu',  scroll to 'Fun Box' and press select,  then scroll to 'WAP Browser' and press select again.

On most networks you can now go to option 3,  and enter the url given to you by the Polyphonic Wizard,  however we have found on the Virgin network,  for some reason it is usually more reliable to select option 1 'Home' to start the Wap server and load the Virgin Mobile home page,  then press and hold the '*' key,  and when the phone ask you to enter a url, enter the url given to you by the Polyphonic Wizard.

For some reason,  this avoids connection errors and 'error 406' problems on the C100,  and confirms the WAP service on the phone is working before you try to connect the phone to your pc.

The Wizard will then send the ringtone to your phone.

Summary

Its easy to add new ringtones to the Samsung C100 with the Polyphonic Wizard, especially if you have a standard dial up or cable modem connection.  You also have options to transfer tones using IRDA and cable.

The Wizard takes care of all the file format conversion,  so you can use almost any midi file you find on the internet with your phone (subject to copyright restrictions).

The best way to try the Polyphonic Wizard is using the free trial version and see how it works.
