Using the Polyphonic Wizard
with the NEC e606
The NEC e606 was one of the launch phones
for the Three 3G network.
As a result, using a traditional
WAP service to send ringtones to the e606 is not always that easy,
you have to be in a 3G area, and Three have to allow access to the
WAP site you are trying to access.
The NEC e606 also uses quite a specific
form of midi file, and simply cannot use just any midi file found on
the net without converting it first.
Fortunately the Polyphonic Wizard can
handle the midi file conversion for you, and the phone comes with a
USB cable and PC File Transfer software to allow you to download the
ringtones to your phone.
Quick Guide
If you want to skip the long guide and
just get on with things, all you need to do is...
- Download and install the Polyphonic
Wizard (here)
- Start the Wizard by clicking on the
desktop icon
- Click the 'add a ringtone' button and
choose a ringtone, then trim the ringtone and finally select NEC
for your phone type.
- Finally use the save option to save
the ringtone to a file you can transfer to your phone.
Thats all there is to it!

Creating a ringtone
To create a ringtone, start the
Polyphonic Wizard by double clicking the icon installed on your desktop.
(If you have not installed the Wizard yet, click
here to download a free trial copy).
Important: You need to be
using version 1.3 of the Polyphonic or later to add ringtones to the NEC
e606
You should not see a screen like this
one:

Click on the large 'Click
here to add a new ringtone' button in the middle of the screen.
The Polyphonic Wizard will
now ask you to select a midi file you want to add to your phone.
Select a midi file you have on your computer.
If you do not have any midi
files yet, or know of a really good source take a look at http://www.ringtonesoftware.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=25
as this contains links to popular midi sites.
Once you have selected a
midi file you will be presented with the next step screen:

Using this screen you can
listen to your midi file, and trim it down to a reasonable size.
Remember, when using a midi file as a ringtone you will only usually
be able to listen to the first 20 seconds before your answer phone cuts
in, so there is little point downloading a 5 minute midi file and
using up all your phones memory!
Slide the arrows above the
bar to the left and right and click the 'Preview' button to listen to the
new trimmed midi file. When you are happy with your new composition,
click the 'Continue to next step' button at the bottom of the screen to
move onto the next step.

In this step you simply need
to select the make of the phone, so for the NEC e606 we simply
select 'NEC'.
You may also be given the
option to volume enhance the ringtone at this stage. The Polyphonic
Wizard will have looked at your midi and will only present this option if
it is possible. If you are given the option try it out - it can make
your ringtone a lot louder!
When you have selected NEC,
click the 'Continue to next step' button again to move forward and you
will be shown another screen like this:

Normally at this stage we
would get an internet connection and click the continue button,
however asd the NEC e606 is not that WAP friendly, and it comes with
a cable, we will use the 'Save ringtone to file' option.
Click on the save
ringtone to file
You will be asked for the
format to save the ringtone to, select MIDI (Nec format).

Click on the continue to
next step button and the Polyphonic Wizard will ask you where you want to
save the new ringtone file to. Select a location you can remember
and save your new midi file.
You will then be shown a
final, completed screen as follows:

You can now close the
Polyphonic Wizard, or click the start button to convert another midi
file to the NEC midi format. If you are running the Polyphonic
Wizard in trial mode please take a moment to read the text in the box
labelled 'Trial mode restriction' as this explains the limitations in the
free trial version.
Sending the ringtone
to your e606
To download the ringtone to
your phone we will use the NEC File Transfer software usually bundled with
the handset. First install the software from the CD provided with
the phone, then attach the e606 to your PC with the supplied cable.
Start he software and you
should see a screen similar to this:

Select the 'Ringtune' icon
at the bottom left (sometimes with is called ringtone depending on the
language and version of the NEC software).
The software will bring up
an option box, and you should select 'Send PC -> Handset'.
You should then see a screen like this one:

Click the Add button and
locate the midi file(s) you created with the Polyphonic Ringtone Wizard.
You can add a few at once. When you have selected all the ringtone
files you want to upload, you need to setup your phone.
On your phone press the
'Menu' button, then go to the bottom right icon 'Data Transfer',
then select 'To/From PC'. Your phone is now ready to accept the new
ringtones.
Finally, go back to
the PC and click the 'Upload' button.
The software will then
transfer your new ringtone to your NEC e606 handset.
Summary
The NEC e606 is not the
easiest phone in the world to add ringtones to, but if you follow
the steps shown above you can add as many ringtones to your phone as you
like, without paying per ringtone for what are often inferior midi
ringtones.
The procedure is actually
quite quick once you have done it once, the best way to try it is
using the free trial version and see how it works.
